Starting the Netting Necklace

(this design is not mine; just these instructions are mine)

1. Wax 1 to 2 yard/s of thread, if desired.

2. Thread needle and tie on 1 stop bead about 6-8 inches from the tail end. Keep stop bead and 6" tail at upper left of work. We will be going back and forth, right to left and back again, across the piece, so keep the thread's tail end in the upper left at all times, so we'll all be going the same direction.

3. Put on 8 beads, and with your needle pointing to the right, pull them over to the stop bead.

4. Now point needle to the left, but keep your work the way it was with the tail end at upper left. Feed needle back through only the 2nd bead from the right. Snug up beads, leaving no slack thread showing (not painfully tight, but somewhat snug). Put on 5 more beads.

Keeping your work down on the table with the stop bead in upper left:

5. Now, with needle still pointing to the left, feed needle through 1st, left-most bead, which is the bead closest to the stop bead (not counting the stop bead), pulling thread up snugly. Put on 4 beads and pull them down to the work.

6. Now with needle pointing right again, skip last bead you just put on and go through only the 2nd to the last bead, snugging up beads each time.

7. Put on 5 beads. Then look for the little 'loop' or scallop of 5 beads near the lower right of the piece. With needle still pointing right, go through only the center bead of these 5. Put on 4 beads.

8. Turn needle to point left. Go through the 2nd to the last bead.
Put on 5 beads.
Go through center bead of the set of 5 beads (scallop) near the lower left.
Put on 4 beads.

9. Point needle to the right. Go through the 2nd to the last bead.
Put on 5 beads.
Go through center bead of the set of 5 beads (scallop) near the lower right.
Put on 4 beads. Repeat steps 8-9 until you reach the desired length.
